Electric scooter battery maintenance

What kind of battery does an electric scooter use?

Lion batteries are now the main batteries used in electric scooters. So what's the difference between Lion battery and traditional one? As a very robust and hot-button one, traditional NiCDand NiMH battery is designed for working in extreme environments, such as cold or hot weather. Their life cycles are also longer than that of lithium-ion batteries, about 700-1000 life cycles, which is very robust for high-output deep discharge applications. On the downside,There is also a charging problem called the "memory effect". In other words, if they are not fully charged after each use, they may only be charged to the final maximum power. This could shorten the batteries' life. Certainly, battery can be repaired, but at a cost of at least 3 life cycles.

    Advantages

    • High energy density-- potential for yet higher capacities.
    • No need for long priming when new. Only one periodic recharge is required.
    • Relatively low self-discharge -- than half that of nickel-based batteries.
    • Low maintenance -- no need for regular discharge, no memory.
    • Specialty cells can provide very high current to applications such as power tools.

      The Lithum-Lion battery of Kaabo

      • High performance electric scooters like Kaabo uses Lion batteries from reputable manufactures. High end models use brand batteries that are safe and deliver the promised capacity.
      • Most Lion ion batteries are all the same considering maintenance. Kaabo uses ternary lithium-ion batteries. The differences between the sub-classes are not really important to the end used as they are about technical stuff like density and cell temperatures.

        The charge and range

Like other batteries, lithum-lion batteries are also available in different sizes. While the battery life,  charging time and range depend on the total capacity of weight, hill, heavy load and other additional factors.

Let's take Kaabo Mantis 8 as an example. Mantis 8 is designed for daily commuting and light off-road entertainment. Therefore, it is equipped with 48V 13Ah battery, which has a relatively fast charging time and sufficient battery range to cope with your daily needs. According to demands, you should pay attention to the specification of battery when select your personal one.

        Electric Scooter battery maintenance

        1. Avoid 0%. Charge often. Some websites note that you should always charge for 100% battery, which doesn't work for Lithium Ion batteries. This is a persistent memory when phones used NiCd and NiMH batteries. There was a memory effect. Some tricks that you had to do get full capacity from your battery, like going through few battery cycles after charging the full capacity. Assure that your battery doesn’t mind unreplete charging,  actually it is prone to. Battery technology has advanced leaps as time goes, while the new Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries are not so fussy.
        2. Best area for battery is to use it until 20% and charge to 80%. This is the best case scenario Li-Ion batteries. But good batteries of Kaabos' have no problems with going from 80 to 100% although that part is always the slowest one to be charged. It’s kinda like filling your travel suitcase with stuff. When there’s lots of room available, it’s easy, but for the last stuff you need to push a bit to make them fit.
        3. Enemy of the all batteries is HEAT! When charging an e-bike you the battery naturally warms up, but you can help your battery by storing and charging the electric scooter battery in a shady and climate controlled environment. For best results, charge between 10°C and 30°C (50°F and 86°F) Your garage, porch and home in general are good. What is important that you shouldn’t charge or leave your e-scooter in strong sunlight on a hot summer’s day.
        4. If you are not going to use your electric scooter in a long time. Electric scooters and Lithium ion batteries in general should be stored with 40-50% charge for best results.

In order to maintain battery's life within the normal range or extend the using time,  mastering correct scientific charging methods is extremely necessary. Kaabo USA believes that if you properly charge your electric scooter battery, coupled with proper maintenance, there is no need to worry about the length of battery life even in cold winter.
